Alan Mercer completes the North Downs 100

During the weekend Alan Mercer of Almost Athletes successfully completed an incredible test of endurance by running in the North Downs Way 100. The 102.9 mile race stretches from Farnham in Surrey to Ashford in Kent, and includes almost 10,000 feet of climb.

Other members of Almost Athletes were out in force in a number of other different events. Closest to home was the Gloucester City Marathon and Half Marathon that took place on Sunday 6th August.  As well as having participants in both races, Almosts were also present as supporters to help cheer the runners up Wainlodes Hill. Eight Almosts took part in the Marathon and Ingrid Harris finished first in her age category with a great time of 3 hrs 48 mins. Kev George completed in 3.43, Mark Willicott in 3.57, Anne-Marie Willicott 4.11, Philip Jeyes 4.42, Lesley Cottle 4.43, Ian Coggin 4.44 and Coralie Pearson 4.54.   A further eight Almosts completed the Half Marathon including Rob Rennell who took part in his first ever race at this distance, guided by Mark Medland. Matt Proome achieved an impressive 1 hr 33 mins closely followed by Andrew Ford at 1.34, Tim Brock 1.41, Oliver Bell 1.50, and Sweetchilli Wan at 2.15. Rachel and Ollie Nolan Snr finished together in 2.16.

On Friday 4th August seven Almosts participated in the Westonbirt 10km summer race. Nick Spice ran an excellent 42 mins 48 secs, Kate Freeman 51.52 and Jackie Slaughter 56.22.  Sheila Chatterley was second lady in her age category with 56.26 and Sarah Wallbridge, Debbie Masding and Kate Plummer were all home in just over 1 hour.  

The Maverick X Series in North Yorkshire took place on Saturday and both Lepha Mccartan and Deborella Cartlidge successfully completed the gruelling 13 km course in 1 hr 12 mins.

The South Downs Midnight Marathon was completed by three Almost entrants – Paul McHaig and his wife Kathy as well as Allan Green who was continuing on his way to an amazing 500 marathons. For Paul, this was his 42nd marathon out of his target of 50 for 2017, whilst it was Kathy’s 9th of the year.
